Getting Connected: How Choosing to Seek Help Allowed a CVCOA Client to Live in His Community of Choice

Fred had been getting by fine---he would have qualified for some food and fuel assistance, but he was getting by. Like many Vermonters, Fred was too proud to seek help.

After receiving a diabetes diagnosis, things began to change. Medications became more and more expensive, and he lost the reliable housing he’d been in for seven years. He was offered housing down in Bellows Falls; however this would have meant leaving his entire social network and community behind, which was the opposite of what he wanted.  Finally, a friend came through with another option for him, but Fred struggled to pay a higher rent. Accepting fuel and food assistance became necessary.

His unique tax situation made application and renewal forms for assistance programs overwhelming. Fred said, “I’m a really smart guy, but when it comes to filling out government forms, oh my god!” His CVCOA case manager was able to offer support, coordinating with agencies to make sure Fred got the assistance he needed. “She went the extra mile, and it was a home run,” he said.

The case manager also connected him with CVCOA’s State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) Coordinator, who provided him with guidance and programs to lower his premium and prescription costs. Fred reflected on this experience, saying, “When I'm at CVCOA I feel heard, seen and cared for, which is not usually the case in this world.”

Getting help with food, fuel and medical bills alleviated a lot of pressure on Fred’s finances and allowed him to continue living in the community of his choice, having access to his support network and friends.

Assistance programs are available for anyone who qualifies.  By applying, you are not taking benefits away from others.  In fact, benefit programs such as 3SquaresVT bring millions of federal dollars into Vermont each month. If you or someone you know is struggling, don’t wait.  Call our Helpline today to get connected to resources: 802-477-1364.
