It's Not One Thing that Enables You to Age in Place
This month, CVCOA looks to the public to support the myriad of free services they offer that enable older adults to age in their community of choice. It's not one thing that enables an older adult to age in place. Instead, most individuals rely on a number of community programs and services so that they can continue meeting their own basic needs. The staff and volunteers at Central Vermont Council on Aging, alongside the other Vermont Area Agencies on Aging, work to ensure every older adult has access to the network of support that meets their needs.
Bill is one of many CVCOA clients whose story shows the network of support necessary for aging in place. He is a CVCOA Case Management client of 20 years who says that he doesn't know what he would do without CVCOA, who is "right there for me every day." Case Management staff coordinate long-term support for clients to help them live independently, including assisting with access to in-home assistance, transportation, public benefits and nutrition. Bill’s Case Managers have helped him secure rides to the doctors and grocery store, receive help around the house, enroll in Meals on Wheels, and more. These wraparound services have allowed him to age at home, focusing on what's important to him because he doesn't have to worry about how he'll get to the doctor or afford his next meal.
While CVCOA receives government funding for their free services, this funding only covers some of our services. CVCOA Executive Director John Mandeville said, “Donations are crucial in giving us the ability to expand our services over and beyond what we can do with government funding streams. All donations are used exclusively for supporting our clients to age with dignity and choice.”
