Winter Warmers!

As we move into the colder part of the year, we have compiled some resources to help you stay warm and safe!

Cold Weather Safety for Older Adults

The National Institute on Aging has tips for keeping your body at a safe temperature both outdoors and indoors this winter.  Also find tips for avoiding a fall and exercising safely in the cold weather.

Fuel and Green Mountain Power Energy Assistance

As the season changes and we move into the colder months, people often struggle to heat their homes.  The State of Vermont’s fuel assistance program may be able to help you afford your heating bills and avoid a heating emergency. This state program is also known as Fuel Assistance, Seasonal Fuel or LIHEAP.  You have the option to receive fuel assistance if you rent or own a house.  Fuel benefits are paid directly to the fuel provider or given in cash if your main source of heat is wood.

In addition, Green Mountain Power has an Energy Assistance Program that would provide a 25% discount each month off your bill.

If you would like to be screened for eligibility, request an application, or need assistance completing an application, please reach out to our Helpline at 802-477-1364.

Crisis Fuel Assistance

If you do not qualify for fuel assistance or have run out of your fuel assistance allocation for the year, you might still qualify for Crisis Fuel.  To be eligible for Crisis Fuel, your gross household monthly income must be below 200% of the federal poverty level.  Find out more about Capstone Community Action's Crisis Fuel program here.

Weatherization Services

Capstone also provides weatherization services free of charge to central Vermonters who meet income and other qualifications. Trained professionals will review the problem areas in your home and identify the most cost-effective steps that can be taken to increase comfort, reduce heat loss, and ensure safety.
